The Pippa 1000

What We Don't Allow:

Over 1,000 ingredients reviewed, researched, and ruled out. The Pippa 1000 is our restricted ingredients standard. Every product we use is measured against it before it enters a client's space. These are some of the major offenders that didn't make the cut.
FRAGRANCE
Commonly found in: multipurpose sprays, floor cleaners, dish soap, laundry detergent.

A single word that can legally conceal up to 3,000 individual chemicals. Manufacturers are not required to disclose what's inside. Commonly linked to hormone disruption, respiratory irritation, and contact dermatitis.
PHTHALATES
Commonly found in: air fresheners, scented cleaners, laundry products.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals commonly hidden inside synthetic fragrances. Linked to hormone disruption, reproductive harm, and developmental issues in children. The CDC has detected phthalate metabolites in the urine of nearly every American tested.
PARABENS
Commonly found in: liquid cleaners, surface sprays, bathroom cleaners.

Synthetic preservatives that mimic estrogen and bind to hormone receptors in the body. Linked to endocrine disruption and detected in human tissue samples across multiple independent studies.
FORMALDEHYDE
Commonly found in: floor cleaners, furniture polish, disinfecting sprays.

A known human carcinogen classified by the EPA. Commonly released by preservatives in conventional cleaning products and continues to off-gas into indoor air long after a product is used.
CHLORINE BLEACH
Commonly found in: bathroom cleaners, mold removers, disinfectants.

Releases chlorine gas in enclosed spaces and produces toxic chloramine gas when mixed with ammonia. Linked to occupational asthma, respiratory damage, and lung inflammation with repeated exposure.
HARSH DISINFECTANTS
Commonly found in: disinfecting wipes, antibacterial sprays, hospital-grade cleaners.

Quaternary ammonium compounds, found in most antibacterial sprays and disinfecting wipes, are linked to respiratory damage, skin sensitization, and the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
AMMONIA
Commonly found in: glass cleaners, multipurpose sprays, floor cleaners.

A common ingredient in glass and multipurpose cleaners that irritates the lungs and airways with repeated exposure. Produces toxic chloramine gas when it comes into contact with bleach, a combination that occurs regularly in conventional cleaning.
OPTICAL BRIGHTENERS
Commonly found in: laundry detergents, surface cleaners, dishwasher pods.

Synthetic chemicals that make surfaces appear cleaner under UV light without actually cleaning them. They deposit chemical residue on surfaces and have been linked to skin irritation and environmental toxicity.
ARTIFICIAL DYES
Commonly found in: dish soap, multipurpose cleaners, toilet bowl cleaners.

Added purely for appearance, artificial dyes serve no cleaning function and introduce unnecessary synthetic chemicals into the spaces being cleaned. Several are classified as potential carcinogens by regulatory agencies in the EU.
PHOSPHATES
Commonly found in: dishwasher detergents, laundry detergents, heavy-duty degreasers.

Water-soluble compounds that pass through wastewater treatment and accumulate in waterways, contributing to algae blooms and aquatic ecosystem damage. Unnecessary for the type of cleaning Pippa performs.
HIGH-VOC SOLVENTS
Commonly found in: degreasers, oven cleaners, multipurpose sprays.

VOCs are released into the air during and after cleaning. Conventional cleaning products emit an average of 22 hazardous VOCs per product, with some continuing to off-gas for days or weeks after use.
QUATERNARY AMMONIUM COMPOUNDS (QUATS)
Commonly found in: disinfecting wipes, antibacterial sprays, fabric softeners.

Found in most antibacterial sprays and disinfecting wipes. Linked to respiratory damage, skin sensitization, and the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Quats persist on surfaces and in the air long after use.
PFAS
Commonly found in: stain-resistant sprays, some floor cleaners, waterproofing products.

Per and polyfluoroalkyl substances, known as forever chemicals, do not break down in the environment or the human body. Linked to immune system disruption, hormonal interference, and increased cancer risk in long-term exposure studies.
TRICLOSAN
Commonly found in: antibacterial soaps, some multipurpose cleaners, hand sanitizers.

An antimicrobial agent linked to hormone disruption and antibiotic resistance. Banned from hand soaps and antiseptic products by the FDA in 2016. The evidence against it has only grown since.
ISOTHIAZOLINONES
Commonly found in: liquid cleaners, disinfecting wipes, multipurpose sprays, laundry detergents.

Preservatives commonly used in liquid cleaners and wipes that are linked to skin sensitization, allergic reactions, and lung irritation with repeated exposure. Several forms are banned in leave-on products in the EU. Manufacturers often list them simply as "preservative" on labels, obscuring their presence entirely.
2-BUTOXYETHANOL
Commonly found in: window cleaners, multipurpose sprays, bathroom cleaners, degreasers.

A solvent linked to eye, skin, and lung irritation and kidney and liver damage with prolonged exposure. Commonly used in window and multipurpose cleaners, it is not always required to appear on product labels in the US, meaning most people have no idea it is in the products being used in their homes.
NONYLPHENOL ETHOXYLATES (NPEs)
Commonly found in: all-purpose cleaners, degreasers, laundry detergents, stain removers.

Hormone-mimicking chemicals that have been banned in the EU and Canada due to their impact on human health and aquatic ecosystems. Still legal and widely used in the US. Linked to endocrine disruption and reproductive harm in both humans and wildlife.
BISPHENOLS (BPA/BPS)
Commonly found in: some cleaning product formulations and packaging, thermal paper, plastic containers

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals that interfere with hormone signaling in the body. BPA has been widely studied and linked to reproductive harm, developmental issues, and increased cancer risk. BPS, often used as a replacement, carries similar concerns.

What We Use Instead

Over 1,000 ingredients reviewed, researched, and ruled out. The Pippa 1000 is our restricted ingredients standard. Every product we use is measured against it before it enters a client's space. These are some of the major offenders that didn't make the cut.
01
FRAGRANCE-FREE, ALWAYS
A clean space should smell like nothing. We use Branch Basics concentrate across general surfaces, kitchens, and bathrooms. It is fragrance-free, fully biodegradable, and replaces dozens of conventional products with one safe formula.
02
PLANT-DERIVED SURFACTANTS
Surfactants lift dirt from surfaces. Ours come from plants, not petroleum. We use coconut and corn-derived surfactants that biodegrade completely and leave no toxic residue on the surfaces your family touches.
03
HYDROGEN PEROXIDE FOR DISINFECTING
When disinfection is needed, we use hydrogen peroxide-based formulas. Hydrogen peroxide breaks down into water and oxygen after use, leaves no chemical residue, and produces zero VOC off-gassing. No bleach, no quats, no chloramine risk.
04
CITRIC ACID FOR MINERAL DEPOSITS
Hard water, limescale, and mineral buildup respond to citric acid, a naturally occurring compound derived from citrus. It descales effectively without harsh solvents, fumes, or residue.
05
FULL INGREDIENT DISCLOSURE
Every product we use must publish its complete ingredient list. No proprietary formulas. No fragrance loopholes. If a company will not disclose what is in their product, we do not use it.

"We believe a clean home should never come at the expense of the people living in it."
